Fortunately, a series of games were released that gave the full story, in ways that are both confirmed and contradicted by the show itself.

In Dimensions, Agumon and Tai are the first of the Digidestined to gain a D-arc and the ability to Biomerge. Ken went twice to the digital world; once when Osamu was still alive, and the second time, during the events depicted on Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers. The catalyst that changed his personality was the Dark Spore that Millenniummon implanted in him.
